Bottled vs. Tap

When I was a kid my Grand-pop used to raise a glass of tap water in the sunlight and say, "It's the best drink that ever was and it's free!" In those days, the water service came out of municipal taxes and was not assessed separately like now.

Things have come a long way since then, and you can pay almost 5 bucks a bottle for "the best drink ever invented!" And you thought gas was expensive!

So is expensive bottled water really better than what comes out of your tap?

If you are objective and look at the testing that has been done, you will come to a few conclusions. These are:

1) Bottled water is of variable quality and the quality and the price are unrelated. However, the quality and the marketing campaign are.

2) 20% of bottled water tests are done in one state…California. In CA, bottled water failed the minimum state requirements for cleanliness, as measured by contaminants and bacteria counts.

In some cases, the contaminants and bacteria could have been hazardous to human health!

3) Tap water also failed, but in less than 12 % of the cases.

4) Tap water was more stringently tested and violations were more likely to be prosecuted.

So the bottom line is that bottled water is less likely to be tested, and more likely to contain impurities that are defined as hazardous to human health than tap water, at least in the current body of scientific studies.

You should not consume bottled water for purity unless the company is actually involved in an independent testing program. Few are.

The recent scandal over a major bottled water manufacturer simply filling up the bottles with tap water also points out that where money is involved, anything goes.

Bottled water is now a 4 billion dollar industry!

So what do I do and what do I recommend?

My tap water here in Southeastern PA is tested and apparently passes the government’s regulations. But it smells bad and tastes funny, often reeking of chlorine or stale fish.

I solve my dilemma by using a good quality commercial water filter that ionizes and alkalinizes the water as it purifies it.

What comes out looks clean, passes my own little home testing routine and tastes just fine.

In the end run the decision becomes one of personal choice. But one thing is clear…water isn’t free anymore.

Sorry, Grand-pop!

Is Food Enough?

I have watched with great interest over the past year an ongoing debate that pits food against vitamins.

Which is better? Which do we need more of? What is the proof for either side?

The simple answer to the food versus vitamin debate is that you can benefit immensely from food and should always eat healthy, but you can also benefit immensely from proper supplementation.

Foodists argue that Mother Nature has placed everything we need right here for us and that eating healthy is all we should ever have to do.

Supplementers like me have a different opinion.

Everyone should make every attempt to eat healthy. I do, and so should you.

But I do not for one minute believe that most people do it all the time or even enough to really derive great health benefits from it.

I always tell my typical patient to take a multi vitamin and fish oil. It’s inexpensive insurance against serious gaps in the diet.

Now what about all the other great things you miss in food, like fiber and the rich interaction between antioxidants and vitamins?

No one can argue with that, but remember, lands and seas are polluted and nutrient deficient compared to 100 years ago, and a significant number of foods contain more water than vitamins these days.

Go to the store in the dead of winter and buy a tomato. Do you think that sorry excuse for a tomato has anywhere near the vitamin C or lycopene your local farmer gets from his crops at the end of the summer?

I sure don't.

Remember, we are talking now just about the very basics of nutrition; just enough to get by.

Now let's throw long hours, family, work demands, stress and exposure to sickness into the mix.

Kinda makes you want to pop an extra multi vitamin or some super berry concoction, doesn't it?

And for good reason!

Neither food nor drugs got rid of my high blood pressure. Supplements did.

Neither food nor drugs help me to sleep when I absolutely have to. I use a supplement when needed.

I don't rely on food or drugs to protect me from the flu, I use a supplement.

And when I work out too hard and start to ache, I reach for fish oil, not mercury laden fish, Motrin or Tylenol.

When I want and need big doses of nutrients and vitamins to help me live at my highest level, I use supplements.

I cannot even imagine a day without them.

I used to try to eat healthy enough that all my aches, pains and fatigues would go away.

It didn't work.

If you are like 99% of individuals out there, it won't work for you either.

Why fight it?

Do both: eat right and take your supplements. I promise you'll have the last laugh in more ways than one!

Slob bully fat bad hair

Don't cha just love it?

Two fully grown, successful, wealthy and powerful adults behaving like pre adolescent kids.

This is the stuff that (media) dreams are made of.

Now instead of getting you to weigh in on who you think is right/wrong, better/less better as this is pretty stupid to spend time on anyway, let's look at a more serious consequence.

You see, Rosie really does not stand a chance; at least that is what behavioral psychologists say.

Her main weapons are that she represent the underdog in this one, as Donald Trump is perceived as one of the most wealthy and powerful people in the world.

Rosie actually is no slob, at least in that department anyway, as she has complete and free access to TV and other media, and is not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

And she is fat.

Sorry, but that is the big bottomed line in human behavioral approach terms.

People cannot look at a fat person and feel the same respect they do for a thinner person, no matter how wonderful the fat person is.

Hey, gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins, right?

Then again, so is greed but you can't really see greed.

You can see fat.

Just look to your left and look to your right.

If you were to honestly poll and I mean honestly, poll a million people who knew nothing about either of these people and said they were feuding, and ask them to pick a side, guess whose side they'd be on.

The Donald's of course, bad hair and all.

The fact that there is even a debate is a tribute to Trump's arrogance, brashness and clearly overpaid hairdresser.

Want more proof? Ok: you are now in a coliseum filled with people you don't know. Over the loudspeaker they announce your name and say that your fate will be determined by the crowd.

Which would you rather hear?

"Fat and Slob" or "bully and bad hair"?

Bully and bad hair never gave anyone cancer. Bully and bad hair never gave anyone diabetes.

Bully and bad hair never gave anyone heart disease or stroke or arthritis unless there is such a thing as arthritis of the scalp.

The study that said it all was the one that found that people would rather have sex with someone who had a sexually transmitted disease than a fat person.

Please don't kid yourself if you are fat. You are not bad. You are not evil. You are not worthless. You may not be a glutton.

You are very probably smart, driven, kind, sensitive and a very meaningful part of our society.

But as long as you are fat, very few people will see you that way.

When your name comes up, there will be the image of a fat person there if even for just an instant.

Psychologists talk about people who sabotage themselves.

What group of people do you think sabotage themselves the most often without meaning to?

If you said fat people, you are right.

If you are fat, get some help.

Get the body you want and the respect and love you deserve.

I can help:
Fabulous Fat Furnace - Ultra Strength Fat Furnace - protein powder

If you are really hurting and/or really serious, check out my Super Slim down Deal.

And never be cowed by bullies with bad hair again!

Doc

P.S. as you might have guessed, Lazlo had a crack at this feud with one of his limericks at the end of the page here.

Rosie vs. The Donald Limerick

Rosie and Donald sitting in a tree

F - e- u - d- i - n - g

First comes food, then comes swear

Then comes Donald kissing Miss America with HIS bad hair

It just goes to show

The worse kind of boast

When delivering a curse or a toast

The "F" bomb always damages the most

You can be a bully and get away with that

But no one can really love you as long as you're fat

Diabesity

Boy do we love neologisms.

No, that is not something that happens in the bedroom - although it could!

It simply refers to the formation of new words.

Here are a couple of other personal favorites.

Benifer. Who could forget the torrid love affair between Ben what-was-his-name and Jennifer Aniston.

Now we have Brangelina.

If you ask me Brad Pitt got the short end of that deal. We can tell from the amount of letters in the name who wears the pants in that family!

Then there is Gen XXL, which describes the current propensity for large numbers of our under 21 crowd to be morbidly obese and energetic slugs.

Diabesity refers to my generation, however: the Baby Boomers.

We have (simply put) set new standards for getting fat, staying fat and getting all the diseases that go with it.

I have told you about cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Some of you still haven't heard.

When I told you you could go numb below the waist, however, and become worthless in bed, then some of you perked up so to speak and listened.

I remind you that in a recent study, both men and women said they would rather have sex with someone who had a sexually transmitted disease than someone who was fat.

If that doesn't grab you nothing will.

If you are in the fat crowd pause and think about that when you lay down next to your spouse.

What’s that you say, he or she is fat too?

Oh that makes it all better.

Ok now that I have railed at you for your own good, here is something you might hear about soon.

When I was graduating Med School back around the time of Thomas Edison, a test known as the BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate was falling into disfavor.
We were told to forggedaboutit since it was worthless.

Well in one of those marvelous medical turnabouts that seems to happen every other day these days what is old is new again.

Of course we don't call it BMR because that would be admitting we were wrong 25 years ago.

Now it's called RMR for resting metabolic rate.

Some medical whiz kids have decided that gosh, your metabolic rate might be important and you might want to measure it so you could see if you need to do more to lose weight.

Here are a few tips for those whiz kids.

1) If you are over weight and not losing, you need to do more to lose weight.

You do not need a measurement to prove this.

2) Anyone who wants to lose weight would do well to increase their metabolic rates, decrease their appetites and up their energy to improve their exercise response.

To that end I have designed 2 supplements, Fabulous Fat Furnace and Ultra Strength Fat Furnace, a protein powder and a series of revitalizing exercises to help you in your quest for the best body.

It’s not rocket science but it has helped me and many others immensely!

The ‘eat me’ hormone and more

In today's installment I answer some specific questions
sent in from my readers.

Some are a bit hostile, some are nice, but in the end run they're all worth reading.

And our resident idiot savant poet, Lazlo is at it again as well.
So here we go with the first question.

Hey, hot shot. You keep saying that high protein diets are the way to go based on our genetics but you haven't told me the scientific basis behind why they work.

Maybe there isn't one.

Jack

Ok Jack, let's take the hypothetical situation that there isn't one.

That could mean we haven't discovered it yet.

So if they discovered a cure for cancer but didn't know how it worked you wouldn't take it if you had cancer until you knew exactly how it worked.

I got news for you, pal; most of the drugs out there that are being taken by millions of Americans are not worked out nearly 100%.

As a matter of fact, many of the mechanisms come out through problems found only after thousands of people have taken them and millions of consumer dollars have already been spent.

That's why there are so many drug screw-ups and recalls.

Now as to protein.

The body often tries to maintain a certain weight set point and to slowly add to that as "insurance" against food scarcity. That is how we are programmed.

A lot of people will have a lot of trouble losing weight until they stimulate their metabolisms with a specific fat burner like Fab Fat Furnace.

High Protein diets like those supplemented with Monster Muscle Protein Powder help with this because they prevent hunger by the following mechanisms.

The amino acids in the whey protein (repeatedly proven to be the best kind for weight loss and hunger control) are converted slowly and steadily to blood sugar instead of rapidly like the quick hitting carbs.

This also supplies the brain with its favorite fuel, sugar, but in a steady fashion so it dose not trigger all the hormones and chemicals we have talked about in the past that mobilize the hunger mechanisms.

Now travel with me if you will to the location of the "Fat stat", the area of the brain where the body's thermostat for weight and appetite lives.

There is a very important protein called YY is made in response to high protein intake and other signals. This hormone interplays with growth hormone thyroid hormone, ghrelin (the “eat me” hormone!) and leptin (the “don't eat me”) and lipase (the hormone that Fab fat furnace activates to release fat for fuel).

So there you have the answer to your question, Jack. Did you get all that? It was a good question but you can tone down the hostility in the future, hot shot. Or I will tell you to do the same thing the eat me hormone tells your body to do!

Next question:

“Doc, what are the best exercises to build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis?” Cathy G.

Cathy, traditionally doctors and researchers have preached that weight bearing exercises such as walking, running and weight training have been the best. I personally think we are overlooking plyometrics, which should be added to the list.

Plyos are a mainstay of our upcoming Brick and Mortar Fitness so keep your eyes out.

Basically these exercises require a rapid deceleration of a weight or mass (body weight for instance) and then an explosive acceleration from a dead stop.

Here is an example: The Squat jump. Drop down into a squat position and explode out of it extending your arms as high as you can. When you land, drop down immediately into the squat again with no pauses and explode back up.

Try 15 reps and chances are you'll be spanked (physiologically, that is!).

Be careful though; these are not easy on the joints and tendons and if you've never done them you may be pretty sore or even injure yourself, so go slow. These are high impact, which is why so many people overlook them.

Look for them to be the "next big thing" in exercise and look for someone to develop a high impact shoe that reduces the shock on your legs when you do them.

For those of you who are undertaking a high intensity workout program make sure you check out Lengthen Your Spine Lengthen Your Life.

Which will help you injury-proof yourself and of course my amazing supplement Hercules Factor to crank up your GH and testosterone so you get the most out of your hard workouts, especially if you are over 35.

Ok, final question for today:

"Doc, how comes you haven't gotten into menopausal supplements." Sara J.

Actually Sara, I kinda have. If you read about fish oil and Sleep Wizard you'll see that many women use one or the other to reduce hot flashes (especially at night), irritability and depression and regulate the other symptoms of menopause.

Since fish oil also appears to be good for bone density, a lot of postmenopausal women take it for that as well, not to mention the potential benefits on breast cancer prevention.

If you are referring to a daily multi vite for women, I've left that to someone else for several reasons. First, Monster Multi is a great multi for both sexes. It does not contain the big dose of calcium most women need postmenopausal because my experience as a doctor showed that most women take supplemental calcium separately anyway and not as part of their multi.

Calcium makes the capsules very big and increases the number you'd have to take to around 10 a day. Most women won't do that. Monster Multi does have some boron and vitamin D as well, both of which are helpful.

If you are referring to the so-called alterative menopausal remedies, I don't make any other than what I mentioned because I haven't found any that work.

As a matter of fact recent studies done at the University of Oregon on 70 different alternative therapies from soy to acupuncture showed no benefit for symptoms, although there may be other benefits.

When I make one, it will work, and I am researching it but it will be a while.

So take your Monster Multi and fish oil and you'll be ahead of the game, man or woman.

Best,

Doc

Oh yes! Lazlo has been chaffing at the bit to release his newest limerick entitled "Don't let me eat me" sung to the tune of Pink's "Don't let me get me"

There are donuts, there are jelly beans
If I eat them I'll burst in my jeans
There is broccoli, there are almonds
If I eat them I'll make some leptin

So doctor doctor won't you please get me some help
I'm so hungry I could take a bite out of myself

Don't let me eat me!

You know it’s bad when you enjoy yourself.

So they told me about Fab Fat Furnace
And all my fat cells screamed please don't burn us
Tired of being compared to damn Brittney Spears
She's so chubby, got no hubby so,

Doctor Dave sent me something good
Now I can walk past all the junk food

Don't need to eat it!
It’s great when you control yourself

Don't need to crave it
It’s great when you can get some help!

Silly sex advice

Two weeks ago I gave a fascinating (to me at least!) Lecture on sex to my Dynamic Doers Group. Everyone on the call loved it and learned a lot.

I will eventually edit and make it available for sale but in the meantime some questions came rolling in that I thought I should address.

This is all serious and good info until you get to the end of course, where we deal with a bit of silliness from one of our readers.

Here we go:

1) Doc, do crunches really help your sex life?

Answer: yes, and in most cases more than people would think.

Here is how to supercharge the crunch for better sex.

When you come up and are focusing on your abs, squeeze your butt muscles together as well.

I demonstrate this (actually you can't see it thank god, but I mention it!) in Brick and Mortar Fitness and Lengthen Your Spine Lengthen Your Life.

This will give you maximum activation of the so called "Ilio hypogastric nerve" which tends to get sluggish as we age; sit a lot and those of us who are women have babies.

This action also activates the PC (pubo coccygeus) muscle which is a main muscle for sexual control.

2) Dr Dave I heard about Arginine helping women's sex drive; does it?

Answer: Actually it does seem to work but in a way similar to Viagra. In other words it allows the biochemical changes associated with sex to happen more easily but it does not really address the all-important mental aspects in women.

For this reason when you look at studies using Arginine they usually report specific symptoms such as increased frequency of intercourse and decreased vaginal dryness.

The increased intercourse part is kinda hard to hang your hat on as this could mean a lot of different things and is not quantified.

The decreased vaginal dryness makes perfect biologic sense and in a way, I guess this could make it a lot more pleasant for a woman to have sex!

I use a big dose of Arginine in Sex Fuel but also couple it to many other active ingredients to improve the neurotransmitters and hormone balance in both men and women.

3) Doc, how important is exercise to sex?

Answer: Let's see; except for lengthening your life, improving your physical health and mental health, boosting your sex hormones (especially testosterone), improving your flexibility, coordination, control and stamina, I'd say not very important.

If you have trouble in the sex department then get Sex Fuel and it will get you on the road to recovery. If endurance is your problem then I'd consider Instant Endurance and or Regenerizer.

And while you're at it stop by Lengthen Your Spine Lengthen Your Life and see what a great exercise program can do for you.

4) Dr Dave, I want to have a baby. Is this going to affect my sex live?

Answer: Well it might for about 10 and a half months or so depending on how complicated your pregnancy is but the best predictor of post baby sex life is the same as post baby weight gain.

Women who exercise, are weight conscious, have a good diet and exercise habits as well as some self esteem will usually return to pretty close their pre baby weight.

If anyone or all of those things are missing they are probably going to get heavier and stay heavier until they fix them.

Same with sex. If your sex life is gonzo before the baby, you'll enjoy it after. If it's slow boring and dull, guess what! It ain't gonna get better post baby.

Act now while there is still time! Sex Fuel and Regenerizer

And now for our final entries

5) Doc, does chocolate really help your sex life.

Chocolate is the super food du jour these days and in point of fact it does have some benefits.

It seems to boost dopamine and serotonin in the correct areas of the brains of women to reduce stress, increase calm and set the stage for sexual desire.

Again the studies are a bit sketchy on this though. The latest one out of Northern Italy showed significantly higher sex drives in daily chocolate eaters.

The problem is the results were self reported and could have been influenced by all kinds of things not the least of which was free chocolate.

Also there are genetic variations in how people (especially women) respond to chocolate so the effect is by no means a home run, unlike Sex Fuel.

6) Dr Dave I get a women's magazine in the mail. I want your opinion on this sex trick I read about.

It says to rub him down there with ice cubes and turn on the fan for a cool start and a sizzling finish.

All I can say is don't ever try that on me!

Sounds like a recipe for a cool start and a fizzling finish!

Which just goes to show you some magazines will print anything and call it advice. I wonder what the headline on that one was.

By the way and this is no joke within 70 miles of where I live there are towns with names like Paradise, Blue Ball and Intercourse and Bird in Hand.

I kid you not. I'll let you put them together in any order you want.

See you next time and tune in here and to the emails for the real truth and nothin' but.

The real cell phone Karma

The news provides a seemingly endless stream of sticky wickets and this week's big story has to do with cell phones and semen.

It seemed a fitting way to jump back in and do a little blogging, something that I stopped months ago when we found out Google had stopped looking for blogs.

So once and while I will bring it back for our mutual enlightenment and amusement.

Would be daddies have probably been told don't wear tight shorts, don't put laptops on your lap and don't turn your nuts into raisins with nude sunbathing (that means you, Nate!).

Now we have an additional situation to content with in the ongoing battle of procreation.

The lowly cell phone, once credited only with removing psychic powers now appears to be on the list of things that can make fathering children harder by killing sperm.

My thoughts on this are that if there is that much radiation emitted from cell phones then they're capable of killing more then sperm.

Frankly, I would start by avoiding the following first before worrying about cell phone karma.

1) Being overweight: in addition to messing up your hormones because fat affects the levels and converts male hormone to female and vice versa, a big slab of fat hanging over your belt line can warm the area, disrupt semen production and affect blood flow.

This is yet another reason why I make Fabulous Fat Furnace.

I have to save mankind from extinction (Yes, it’s true infertility is on the rise).

2) Cigarettes: nicotine constricts blood vessels everywhere, but appendages get nailed first. You do know the 5 appendages don't you?

Here's a start: hands, feet, the tip of the nose. You can figure out the rest (Yes, ladies, it works this way for you but not as soon since blood has a little less far to go... we hope!)

3) Alcohol: Yep, directly toxic to the brain and raises prolactin levels as well, which zaps the drive and ability.

And of course, being the world's most prominent supplement guru, I do have several supplements that will help you.

A) Regenerizer: In addition to the little sex hormone DHEA that has caused its semi annual stir in the past few weeks, big doses of CO Q 10 are associated with more vigorous sperm and thus better fertility.

Here are some of the things that this particular supplement may do for you:

  • Increase sperm motility

  • Normalize sperm morphology

  • Improve capacity for oocyte penetration

So lets make that Ingredient One in Dr Dave's Best Stud Fuel

Next is of course Sex Fuel because if you don't have the drive and the mechanics even healthy sperm won't help your fertility.

Designed for and touted by both men and women this supplement solves the gap between male and female sex drives and pushes your bedroom adventures to new levels.

Even if you don't want to sire children!

That makes it ingredeint number 2 in Stud Fuel

Number 3?

Hercules Factor of course: crank up those hormone levels and back comes your drive along with some lovely lean muscle and less fat.
Something that will look good when the clothes come off.

And finally Monster Multi with minerals for the simple fact that it contains most of the ingredeints consistanly rated as the Top 10 supplements (Regenerizer rounds out the field) and we all need a good foundation to build our house on.

Or your family!

Sperm counts have dropped a reported 30% in the last generation, a fact that puts the future of mankind in question.

Saving humanity is a tough job but somenone’s got to try!

P.S. Lazlo our resident idiot savant poet wanted to be part of the blog revival, no matter how fleeting, so he came up with a song for this occasion.

Cell phone Karma (sung to the tune of Rings Copyright 1971 Cymarron http://www.oldies.com/artist-songs/Cymarron.html)

Ring ring cell phone rings baby just hold on
And let me put you on speakerphone

We've been trying so hard to conceive
But now I learned this Lil device might be sendin' radiation to my stones

I saw the doc last week I recall
"n he said stop making those cell phone calls

They'll drop your sperm

And make it hard to have that son you've been thinking about

Ring ring cell phone rings and there's another drop
In my sperm count... Lazlo B. Zilly
