Flax loses to fish oil yet again

Oh I can feel those tempers boiling.

People are really married to their supplements and no matter what you tell them it does not get past the wall of resistance that they have erected once they are true believers.

Well it's time for a divorce.

This is not the first I have told you that flax is an inferior supplement.

In the past I've told you that plant fatty acids like flax and hemp are 18 carbon and need to be converted to the human 22 carbon form.

Then I told you that the conversion from 18 to 22 is very inefficient in people.

I went on to tell you that 22 carbon fatty acids are needed by people so why not just take fish oil and be done with it?

Well those of you who are interested in science said, "cool" but most of you said, "schtop mit da szience already". Then I told you about the studies that linked the oil in flax to prostate cancer and possibly to its female counterpart, breast cancer.

Now that got the attention of at least the guys in the audience.

But now today, I have the biggest news for you.

Sadly it does require a little science so buckle up for a minute and pop your Instant Einstein if you are not scientifically inclined.

Bottom line: People need to eat plants but not every plant is useful or even healthy for every person.

Recently it was discovered that millions of people in America and of course around the world are low or missing an enzyme called D6D (delta-6 desaturase).

This is the enzyme you need to make flax and other plant based oils into healthy human friendly Omega 3's.

Now if you don't have it you will use another enzyme called delta-5 desaturase.

This takes the flax and makes it into an Omega 6 fat.

These fats are known to contribute to cancer, heart disease, stroke and other inflammatory conditions including arthritis and probably Alzheimer's.

I think they are also the basis for some of the behavioral disorders we see so much of today including ADHD and depression.

Now here is another thing you should know. If you drink alcohol, are highly stressed, eat a lot of Omega 6 fats, saturated fats, trans fats, don't sleep enough, eat a lot of sugars starches or have diabetes, you can inactivate your D6D enzyme without actually having the deficiency.

This information is critical for our nation and its health because the rise in diabetes and stress with our fast paced society can now be linked to a condition I've been telling you about for years: Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency.

As I have said in the past I think this should be recognized as a disease, since it seems to be at the root of so many disease associated with aging.

Speaking of aging, that is another condition where your D6D levels go down.

What's the answer?

Simple: take fish oil or if you need extra anti-inflammatory punch take super Omega 3.
